Every one of the 999 already exists — the art is a pure function of the token number, so you can look at all of them right now, before a single one is mined. What you choose is how you go after the one you want.
A round has to be opened once before anyone can submit. Anyone can do it, it costs only gas, and it gives whoever pays no advantage at all.
Your miner runs for the whole minute and only ever reports an improvement. Sending a second hash is pointless — only your single lowest one can win, so one transaction per round is all you ever need.
Among hashes that clear the bar, exactly one in k goes k times deeper. So unlocking the single rarest dog takes about 999× the work of the most common one — which is precisely what being one-in-999 is worth. There is no luck anywhere in that sentence.
Keep the hash you have and claim now, or keep digging for something rarer while someone else might take it first. That decision is the whole game.

Both hash keccak(seed, your address, nonce) against the same entry bar, and your address sits inside the hash — so nobody can lift your solution out of the mempool and send it as their own. One supply, two doors: neither mode can ever mint the same number twice, because DEPTH takes a specific dog and ROUND simply steps over anything already taken.
